Azerbaijan says landmines remain major security threat

Almost 14% of Azerbaijan’s territory remains contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance, Presidential Special Envoy Elchin Amirbekov said.

Despite extensive efforts over the past five years, only about one fifth of the affected areas have been cleared so far, he added. The presence of landmines continues to pose a serious security threat, Amirbekov said.
