California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat seen as a potential 2028 presidential contender, was denied access to the U.S. pavilion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he had planned to speak, his office said on X.

According to the statement, the USA House refused Newsom entry for media engagement under pressure from the White House and the State Department, despite an invitation from Fortune, an official media partner of the forum. Fortune confirmed it had invited the governor but was later informed that his participation could not be accommodated.

White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly criticised Newsom’s trip, while U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent linked California’s economic policies to population outflows and budget deficits, describing the governor in critical terms.

Tensions between President Donald Trump’s administration and Democratic leaders in California have persisted for years.
