Siberian air masses bring sharp cold snap to Azerbaijan

Weather conditions in Azerbaijan are being shaped by complex synoptic processes, a senior official at the National Hydrometeorology Service said.

Deputy head of the service Gulnara Abbasova said Arctic and Siberian cold air masses began moving into the country from the evening of Feb. 3, triggering a sharp drop in temperatures, stronger winds and precipitation in the form of rain and snow.

She said the impact of a Mediterranean cyclone combined with rising atmospheric pressure has brought strong north-westerly winds and blizzard conditions to the Absheron peninsula. Wind speeds in Baku and the surrounding area have reached up to 28 metres per second.
