Lebanon declares day of mourning after Israeli strikes

Lebanon has declared April 9 a national day of mourning following Israeli strikes that killed more than 250 people, the government said.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced the decision, according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency.

Israeli attacks on Lebanon killed 254 people, authorities said, after Israel argued that a recently agreed ceasefire did not apply to Lebanon.

Iran, the United States and their allies reached a two-week ceasefire agreement overnight on April 8, with Tehran saying safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured during that period.

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said a ceasefire in Lebanon had been part of the initial conditions of the plan.
