Azerbaijan marks 17 years since Oil Academy attack
Azerbaijan on April 30 marks the 17th anniversary of the attack at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy.
The attack took place on April 30, 2009, in the academy’s second building, where gunman
Farda Gadirov opened fire with a Makarov pistol.
Twelve people were killed and 13 others were wounded. The victims included teachers, students, academy staff and a security guard.
Gadirov killed himself after reaching the sixth floor and being surrounded by police.
Under an August 10, 2010 court ruling, three defendants in the case were sentenced to life imprisonment, while another received an 11-year prison term.
