Serbia aims to become Balkans’ main gas transit hub

Serbia aims to become Balkans’ main gas transit hub
15.05.2026 11:30

Serbia is seeking to become a key gas transit hub in the Balkans by expanding infrastructure and diversifying supply routes as Europe moves to reduce dependence on Russian energy.

Belgrade plans to build new gas interconnectors with Romania and North Macedonia, allowing access to Azerbaijani gas through the Southern Gas Corridor and LNG terminals in Greece.

Serbia is also considering a connection to Croatia’s Krk LNG terminal. Croatian Economy Minister Ante Šušnjar said Belgrade had shown interest in a pipeline link that would provide access to alternative gas supplies.

At the same time, Serbia continues to receive most of its gas from Russia through the Balkan Stream pipeline, an extension of TurkStream running via Bulgaria and Serbia.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić told Reuters earlier that Belgrade planned to gradually increase gas purchases from European suppliers and reduce reliance on Russian imports.
