SOCAR, Gran Tierra Energy plan 2D seismic survey in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR and Canada’s Gran Tierra Energy plan to carry out a 2D seismic survey to clarify the geological structure of the Guba-Caspian oil and gas region, SOCAR said.

The work is planned under an exploration, development and production-sharing agreement covering a prospective onshore area in the region.

Officials met in Azerbaijan’s Guba district during the project’s initial preparatory stage to discuss the next steps.

SOCAR and Gran Tierra Energy signed the agreement in February 2026. The Canadian company will operate the project and hold a 65% participating interest.

The exploration programme also includes collecting gravity data, conducting 3D seismic surveys and drilling exploration wells to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the contract area.
