Shah Deniz Alpha platform resumes gas production following planned maintenance

Shah Deniz Alpha platform resumes gas production following planned maintenance

The Shah Deniz consortium has resumed natural gas production from the Shah Deniz Alpha platform following a scheduled maintenance shutdown that ran from August 5 to August 10.

Tamam Bayatli, Head of Communications at operator BP-Azerbaijan, confirmed  output on Shah Deniz Alpha has fully returned to normal operating capacity. The field's second production platform, Shah Deniz Bravo, continued uninterrupted operations throughout the maintenance window.

Earlier, on August 12, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) noted that maintenance across the Shah Deniz framework could cause gas flows to Europe via the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) to fluctuate through September 1, with daily volumes potentially dipping by up to 19 million cubic meters on certain days.

Bayatli explained that BP-Azerbaijan manages the upstream production and transport to the Sangachal Terminal. Combined output across both Shah Deniz platforms has now rebounded to its baseline average of over 70 million cubic meters per day. Exports exceeding 60 million cubic meters daily continue to be routed to Georgia, Turkey, and European buyers.

In the first half of 2026, the Shah Deniz field produced 14 billion cubic meters of gas, matching the output of the same period last year. Since commercial development began in December 2006, the field has yielded approximately 280 billion cubic meters of gas against total estimated reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic meters.
