Act of vandalism against the grave of Najaf Najafov
A bas-relief has been stolen from the grave of Najaf Najafov. This became known early on the morning of September 9. The act of vandalism took place at the Second Alley of Honor (Gurd Gapisi).
The bronze bas-relief represents two pages of the newspapers Molodyozh Azerbaidzhana ("Youth of Azerbaijan") and Azadlig, mounted on the tombstone. Najaf Najafov was the editor of both newspapers in the 1980s and 1990s, and subsequently one of the leaders of the national liberation movement.
In Elchibey's government, he held the post of presidential adviser.
He passed away in 1999.
In 2004, President Ilham Aliyev posthumously awarded Najaf Najafov the "Shohrat" (Glory) Order for his immense contributions to the establishment of independent journalism in Azerbaijan.
The Yasamal District Police Department is engaged in the search for the perpetrators.
