WW3 fears grow as Russia 'deploy most advanced missile system ever'

WW3 fears grow as Russia 'deploy most advanced missile system ever'

Vladimir Putin will soon have the first production prototypes of the next-generation S-500 air defence system, according to reports in Russia.

It comes as tensions between Russia and Turkey grew after Putin’s forces fired a warning shot at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean sea.

And last month Turkey blasted a Russian fighter jet out of the sky.

The S-500 system, dubbed Prometheus, can intercept up to 10 ballistic missiles hurtling towards targets at a speed of 5km a second.

Missiles with a range of 2,200 miles are also said to be part of the system.

It is currently under development by the Russian-based Almaz-Antey arms firm.

Defence expert Igor Korotechenko told Russia’s Sputnik News agency: "We heard figures indicating that the Russian Aerospace forces will soon receive more S-400 systems.

"The S-500 will soon finish state tests and enter service.

"It is fully capable of defending our home country for decades to come.”

Korotechenko said the system is one of the best in the world.

Earlier this month rumours emerged over President Putin launching a "Doomsday plane”.

The aircraft would allow him to control war efforts from the skies.

The news comes amid reports that while Russia is gearing up for World War Three the country's army are "old, slow and ill-equipped".

A brand new air defence system would mean less reliance on a sub-par army.

On Friday (December 11), Putin ordered his military chiefs to beef up its strategic nuclear forces.

He warned the country that Russia should be ready for nuclear war.

Turkey also complained to Russia over an incident in which a Russian sailor was pictured with a rocket launcher on the deck of a naval ship passing through Istanbul.

Further east, the Chinese navy launched a latest round of military drills in the South China Sea.

The drill was confirmed by official state media accounts.

The Chinese defence ministry said in a statement: "The People’s Liberation Army Navy in recent days organised a fleet to go to relevant waters in the South China Sea, by way of the Western Pacific, to carry out exercises.

"This action is a routine arrangement made in accordance with this year’s naval training plan.”
