NATO's new defence system to block missiles from Russia and ISIS

NATO's new defence system to block missiles from Russia and ISIS

With tensions high between Russia and ISIS, NATO's controversial new Aegis Ashore system will be be able to see-off any attacks being aimed across Europe and the US.

The new US Missile Defense Agency tested the new missile defence system at its remote Barking Sands site in Kauai on the Hawaiian islands last week.

And part of it will be based in Romania and Poland that will help protect the likes of the UK, France and Germany from imminent missile attacks.

NATO's new plans will cost around $2.3bn (£1.52bn).

A video of the new weapon defence system has emerged only hours after reports emerged of Russia deploying its own advanced air defence system.

It comes as tensions between Russia and another Nato member, Turkey, grew after Putin's forces fired a warning shot at a Turkish vessel in the Aegean sea.

Vice Admiral James D Syring, director of the MDA, said: "This test demonstrated that the same Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense capability that has been fielded at sea and operational for years, will soon be operational ashore as part of the European Phased Adaptive Approach Phase 2 capability in Romania.

"I am very proud of the tremendous effort by the entire government/industry team in executing this vitally important mission for our nation and our allies."

The US government says the missiles have no offensive capability and only target incoming ballistic missiles launched by a hostile power. They are designed to protect against Russia but also conceivably ISIS and Iran.

The US Department of State says the system was designed because of "the increasing threats posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles from the Middle East".

Russia argues Aegis Ashore can launch Tomahawk cruise missiles in violation of a 1987 treaty between the US and the former Soviet Union.

Earlier this year Pentagon official Brian McKeon denied that and said: "This contention is false. The Aegis Ashore system is only capable of launching missile defense interceptors such as the SM-3, which are not subject to the treaty.

"While the Aegis weapon system aboard the Aegis destroyers and cruisers can fire cruise missiles, this capability is not included in Aegis Ashore."
