Gay ISIS romance featuring drug mule and jihadi in love set to hit the stage

But his fate intertwines with an Islamic State commander – who he finds out is secretly homosexual.

The two are caught in a typical boy-meets-jihadi tale when Owen attempts to take advantage of the commander, before the two start to develop stronger feelings.

Irish playwright Ian Begley, who wrote the script, said: "My inspiration for this story gradually came after doing an in-depth study into this barbaric regime.

"ISIS claim to have more than 200,000 members worldwide and are merciless amongst those who contradict their beliefs, such as those within the LGBT community.

"Sometimes you cannot help who you fall in love with even if it contradicts your religious beliefs or culture.

"I began to think about this phenomenon taking place in the most absurd scenarios and this is where ISIS: A Gay Love Story popped into my mind.

Begley hopes to premier the show at the Dublin Fringe Festival.

He added: "The play is essentially about an Irish drug mule who has a gay love affair with an ISIS commander, so I wouldn’t disagree with anyone who said my play sounded totally ludicrous.”

He has said his dream leading man would be Robert Sheehan – best known for his role as Nathan Young in hit E4 series Misfits.

The playwright initially considered making the unproduced play – his first work – an all-singing-all-dancing-affair.

His initial concept also focussed around the ISIS commander being "as camp as christmas”.

But he later decided to make the play "a serious drama with a necessary touch of humour."

The show is currently seeking donations through Kickstarter to raise the £1,200 needed to bring the idea to the stage.

When asked if he thought there were any homosexual members of the real world terror cell, he said: "Thousands! It would be absurd to think otherwise.

"People often compare ISIS to the Nazi party, and if you did your homework, you would realise that the Third Reich was full of gay men and women despite openly condemning them.”
