Pope Leo XIV has announced plans to visit the Turkish city of Iznik (ancient Nicaea) to commemorate the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, he told reporters, according to Haber Global.

The Vatican has already begun preparations for the trip, which may take place later this year.

His predecessor, Pope Francis, had intended to visit Iznik in 2024 but was unable to carry out the trip.

The First Council of Nicaea, convened in 325 AD by Roman Emperor Constantine I, is considered a landmark event in Christian history.
