U.S. State Department urges Americans to leave Iran via Turkey or Armenia

U.S. citizens should immediately leave Iran using overland routes through Armenia or Turkey, the U.S. Department of State said in an advisory.

The department cited a surge in protest activity across Iran, noting that authorities have imposed movement restrictions, closed roads, disrupted public transport and blocked internet access in several areas.

According to the State Department, airlines continue to limit or fully cancel flights to and from Iran, with some carriers suspending services at least until Friday, January 16. As a result, international air travel remains unstable and subject to sudden changes without prior notice.

“U.S. citizens are advised to be prepared for prolonged internet outages and to plan alternative means of communication in advance. If a safe opportunity exists, U.S. citizens should consider departing Iran overland via Armenia or Turkey,” the statement said.
