NATO exercises in Greenland may expand to year-round training

NATO exercises in Greenland may expand to year-round training

Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command is expanding the scope of NATO military exercises in Greenland and is considering conducting them throughout the year, Greenland commander Major General Søren Andersen said.

Speaking to newspaper Sermitsiaq, Andersen said military activity would be spread across the year and include rotating types of training. He stressed that regular exercises do not necessarily mean a permanent troop presence but are vital to protecting Greenland and NATO’s northern flank.

Exercises focus on safeguarding critical infrastructure, including ports and airports in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq. NATO held three exercises in Greenland in 2025, the paper noted.
