U.S. considers naval blockade to curb Iran’s oil exports
27.01.2026 18:00

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering the option of a naval blockade aimed at halting Iran’s oil exports, similar to measures previously used against Venezuela.

According to The New York Times, Trump has received intelligence reports pointing to weaknesses in Iran’s economy and instability within the ruling system, despite a recent lull in protests.

Over the weekend, U.S. Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper visited Syria, Iraq and Israel for meetings with military leaders and allies. U.S. officials warned Iraq of possible retaliatory measures should pro-Iranian groups continue attacks on American bases and troops.

Consultations were also held with Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The Pentagon has stepped up its regional presence by deploying F-15E fighter jets, Patriot and THAAD air defense systems, while U.S. long-range bombers have remained on heightened alert for more than two weeks.
