IAEA chief Grossi meets Zelenskiy in Kyiv on Chornobyl anniversary
International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said he had travelled to Kyiv for the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster and met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Grossi said the talks covered the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the agency’s work to support the restoration of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, including new power units at the Khmelnytskyi plant and repair work at Chornobyl.
Grossi also said the IAEA had signed a cooperation agreement with Ukraine’s energy minister covering the recovery of the power system, nuclear energy development, reconstruction of grids and substations, and support for research and development.
The visit came as Ukraine marked the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster amid renewed concern over nuclear safety during the war.
