More than 400 detained during U.S. Independence Day celebrations in California
More than 400 people were detained in Newport Beach, California, over the past 36 hours during Independence Day celebrations, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Local authorities had announced a zero-tolerance policy for offences ahead of the holiday.
On the evening of July 4, celebrations turned into unrest involving street fights, thefts, damage to road signs and illegal fireworks.
Most of those detained were young people, many of whom were not Newport Beach residents. A large number of arrests were made at a local beach after reports of illegal fireworks.
