Armenia's EU membership bid triggers sharp regulatory conflict with EAEU norms, harms Yerevan

Armenia's EU membership bid triggers sharp regulatory conflict with EAEU norms, harms Yerevan

Armenia's formal bid for European Union membership will inevitably spark profound legislative and regulatory contradictions with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) legal framework, primarily harming Yerevan itself, Anews.az reported, citing Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"Following an application, Armenia will have to begin harmonizing its regulatory framework across multiple domains — including trade, phytosanitary standards, and customs — with European Union requirements. These standards do not align with those adopted within the EAEU. This will trigger deep contradictions that will harm Armenia first and foremost," Peskov outlined.

The Kremlin official noted that this impending legal conflict prompted EAEU heads of state during their latest summit to urge Armenia to conduct a national referendum on its geopolitical trajectory without delay. Peskov also pointed to the historical precedent of Turkey and other candidate nations, underscoring that decades can elapse between filing an application and gaining EU accession.
