Health Ministry says hepatitis B and C can silently damage the liver
28.07.2026 15:34

Hepatitis B and C viruses can remain symptom-free for years while gradually damaging the liver and increasing the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer, Azerbaijan’s Health Ministry expert, gastroenterologist and hepatologist Emin Mammadov said on World Hepatitis Day.

Mammadov said hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination, while hepatitis C is now curable in most cases with modern antiviral medicines.

He urged people in high-risk groups, including those who have received blood transfusions, undergone surgery or dental procedures, or had tattoos or piercings with non-sterile equipment, to be tested for hepatitis B and C.

Early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer, he said.
