At least 29 ships attacked since start of Iran conflict

At least 29 commercial vessels have been attacked, seized or involved in armed incidents since the outbreak of the conflict around Iran, raising concerns over the security of one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

The Strait of Hormuz normally handles about a fifth of global seaborne oil trade and a significant share of liquefied natural gas exports, making any disruption a major risk for global energy markets.

According to Reuters data, the incidents have involved oil tankers, container ships, bulk carriers and support vessels. Some were damaged by missiles or drones, while others were seized or came under fire.

The attacks have pushed up war-risk insurance costs and prompted some shipping companies to reconsider routes through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts say any further escalation could increase risks to global energy supplies and international trade.
