SOCAR Deploys Cutting-Edge 'HD OBN' 3D Seismic Technology for the First Time
State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has commenced deploying the latest High-Definition Ocean Bottom Node (HD OBN) 3D seismic acquisition technology across offshore fields managed by the Azneft Production Union (PU).
The HD OBN method utilizes ultra-dense autonomous ocean-bottom seismic receivers (nodes) to generate highly detailed imaging of subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs, particularly within complex geological structures and producing brownfields. Unlike conventional towed-streamer marine seismic surveys, stationary nodes can be placed directly adjacent to active drilling platforms and within navigational corridors. The system captures full-azimuth (360°) seismic signals, virtually eliminating shadow zones, and operates reliably at water depths ranging from shallow waters down to 3,000 meters.
According to SOCAR, the primary deployment is being executed between 15 offshore platforms, enabling extensive mapping of seabed infrastructure and subsurface formations. Earlier this year, international energy company bp also implemented HD OBN technology at the Caspian's Karabakh field.
