Supreme Court to hear an appeal from Khadija Ismayilova
16.05.2016 14:06
Cassation appeal of journalist in custody, Khadija Ismayilova, against the decision by the Baku Court of Appeal will be considered May 25 in Azerbaijan, said the journalist's lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev.

The Supreme Court will review the appeal from Khadija Ismayilova on May 25 at 14.30. The case will be considered by judges presided by Ali Seyfaliyev, the lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev said. The defense will insist on acquittal of Ismayilova.

The cassation complaint was filed back in January of this year, but for unknown reasons, the proceedings were delayed.

A journalist of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty Khadija Ismayilova was arrested in December 2014 and subsequently sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of economic crimes. She and local and international human rights activists believe that she is being persecuted for the investigation of the involvement of the Azerbaijani ruling elite in corruption.
