Georgia won't follow US sanctions until court decision

The US Treasury Department's sanctions will not apply to Georgian citizens until a national court makes a decision, reads a statement by the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), reported from Georgian media.

"The sanctions regime applies to a Georgian citizen if a Georgian court issues a guilty verdict that has binding legal force based on the sanctions applied to him or her," the statement said. The NBG said that it systematically monitors compliance with international sanctions, as well as compliance with its own rules and national legislation by individual participants in the financial sector.

"The financial sector of Georgia operates in full compliance with the requirements stipulated by the sanctions regime," the regulator said in a statement.

On September 16, the US imposed sanctions against 64 Georgian citizens for violating human rights and undermining democracy.

Four people were included in the US Treasury Department's sanctions list: the head of the Interior Ministry's Department for Special Assignments Zviad Kharazishvili, his deputy, and two representatives of the pro-Russian group Alt-Info.
