NATO urged to rethink strategy amid Russia’s multi-domain challenge
15.12.2025 13:04

NATO needs to reassess its strategic posture and prepare for confrontation with Russia that extends beyond traditional Atlantic naval operations and land-based scenarios in Europe, according to a confidential review by NATO’s Military College.

Andrew Monaghan, a research fellow at the NATO Defense College (NDC), said the development of comprehensive maritime power is a central element of Russia’s foreign policy strategy, helping Moscow strengthen its position amid ongoing geo-economic rivalry.

The review notes that this shift pushes NATO’s strategic focus beyond a renewed “Battle of the Atlantic” or ground operations in northeastern Europe towards a multi-front, multi-domain Russian challenge with a global reach.
