Trump says New York mayor’s policies are hurting city
U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, saying the mayor’s tax policies were damaging the city and driving residents away. Trump made the remarks in a post on X on Thursday.
Trump’s criticism comes amid debate over Mamdani’s proposal, backed with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, to impose a tax on second homes in New York worth more than $5 million. Reuters has also reported on a separate Mamdani proposal for a 2% income tax increase on people earning more than $1 million a year.
Mamdani said in an interview with CBS that he and Trump remain in contact despite major political differences and that both share “love” for New York City. CBS said the two had previously met in November and again in February.
