EU opens accession talks with Moldova

The European Union has formally launched the first phase of accession negotiations with Moldova by opening the “Fundamentals” cluster, covering the rule of law, democratic institutions, public administration reform and economic criteria.

The talks began in Luxembourg alongside the same stage of negotiations with Ukraine after EU member states agreed to move the enlargement process forward. Moldova was granted EU candidate status in 2022 and formally opened accession negotiations in 2024.
