U.S. senators to press Treasury on new Russia sanctions
A group of U.S. senators plans to urge Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to support a new sanctions bill targeting Russia, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The discussions are expected to take place on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. The bill, promoted by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, would allow secondary sanctions and tariffs on countries that continue economic cooperation with Russia, including purchases of oil and uranium.
The WSJ said the bill had broad support in Congress, but the White House was seeking to soften parts of the language to preserve flexibility for diplomatic talks over Ukrain
