U.S. urges citizens to remain vigilant in Iraq

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad urged American citizens in Iraq to remain highly vigilant following drone attacks on Erbil on July 15.

In a security alert, the mission advised citizens to monitor local media and follow instructions from Iraqi security authorities. It also warned that Iraq’s airspace could be closed without notice and flights could be suspended.

Travellers were advised to check flight status with airlines before heading to airports in Erbil, Baghdad, Basra and Sulaimaniyah.

The State Department maintains its highest Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Iraq, citing terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, civil unrest and the U.S. government’s limited ability to provide emergency assistance.

The U.S. diplomatic mission said it continued to operate in Iraq despite the departure of some personnel.
