Czech Coalition Proposes Automatic Deportation for Convicted Foreigners

The Czech Republic’s ruling coalition will propose the automatic deportation of foreign nationals sentenced to three or more years of imprisonment, the ČTK news agency reported, citing Tomio Okamura, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and leader of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party.

According to the report, the leaders of the ruling coalition parties—Freedom and Direct Democracy, Action of Dissatisfied Citizens (ANO), and the Motorists party—have reached an agreement on the measure. Justice Minister Jeroným Tejc has prepared a draft bill outlining the initiative.

Okamura stated that a defined list of offenses triggering automatic expulsion will be established, applying to crimes carrying a prison term of at least three years.

Under current Czech law, the deportation of foreign offenders is not automatic and requires an explicit ruling by the courts.

The ruling coalition also agreed to tighten penalties for rape convictions across the board, covering both domestic and foreign offenders. The Justice Minister is drafting guidelines directing public prosecutors to file appeals more consistently, particularly in cases where courts issue lenient sentences.
