CAIRO — Nearly 500 kids and adults gathered at Cairo-Durham High School Wednesday evening to watch faculty members of the school challenge the world famous Harlem Wizards in a charity basketball game for the second consecutive year.

“I thought it went really well. Everybody seems to enjoy themselves,” Patty Gibson, a junior class administrator, said.

Throughout the game, members of the Wizards — Arthur “King Arthur” Lewis, David “DP” Paul, Rashann “Rocket Barner”, Claude “ToJo” Henderson and Dexton “Air Jamaica” Williamson — showcased a variety of dribbles, dunks, long-distance shots and dance moves.

“They really did a good show tonight,” Gibson said. “They were very active with the crowd and the kids love it, as you can see from all the screaming.”

The event was hosted by the C-D junior class and class administrators Gibson, Debbie Gerstberger, Beth Daly and Beth Caputo. The event is used for fundraising as an attempt to help pay for next year’s senior class trip.

As for the faculty, Gibson notes that three C-D school district principals played and that faculty members don’t hesitate to sign up to participate. The students, too, love to watch their teachers play.

“Now the kids will have something talk about in school for the next few days,” Gibson said.

Last year, the Wizards returned to the C-D gymnasium for the first time in a few years following a brief break. Given the success of this year’s event, it’s possible that the Wizards could return in 2015.
