SCC explains why mobile phones get held at customs checkpoints

SCC First Deputy Chairman Safar Mehdiyev said Azerbaijan’s customs agencies are carrying out a thorough investigation into the import of mobile phones, APA reports.

 

"For now, it’s too early to speak about that. But I have to say that tax evasion cases occur as mobile phones are regularly brought to the country via mail with the same name in the same months and in different periods. Within a month, up to 8,000 mobile phones have been brought to the country this way. This is of course one of the primary issues the country’s customs agencies are supposed to deal with; online shopping cannot be free of taxes, it also needs taxing. Investigation is underway in this regard,” Safar Mehdiyev said.
