New Baku international sea trade port

New Baku international sea trade port
21.10.2014 19:00
The Azerbaijan Republic Ministry of Transport intends to relocate the port facilities of Baku city from the current city centre to an area located 65 km south of Baku, along the Caspian Sea shore. Local contractor Evrascon has awarded the project. The project consists of three phases with a total sum of about €870 million.
Evrascon has subcontracted Witteveen+Bos to optimize parts of the reference design into a structural layout and construction methods that fit best to Evrascon specialisms and capabilities. Furthermore, Witteveen+Bos is responsible for delivery of a final design that meets international standards and is assisting Evrascon in the design approval procedure.
Witteveen+Bos's activities for this project initially focussed on land reclamation design and monitoring. Subsequently the activities were extended with the design of three quay walls with a total length of about 1.5 km. The project site is located in a seismic active area. Earthquake design loads are significant and turned out to be dominant for the quay wall designs. Because of the complex structure type in which a retaining wall, anchorage system and deck on piles are integrated, quay wall design had to be performed based on advanced dynamic analysis of soil and structure.
Currently, the designs are in approval stage and construction works of the quay walls are starting. New Baku port project phase I is expected to finish in 2015.
