Iran seeks electricity trade with Azerbaijan, Russia

Iran's Deputy Energy Minister Esmaeel Mahsouli has said Iran plans to trade electricity with Russia and Azerbaijan, Trend news agency reports, citing local media.

Iran plans to import 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Russia in summer and export a similar amount in winter, ISNA News Agency said.

Electricity will be transferred through Azerbaijan with which Iran plans to trade about 200 MW of electricity.

"We will start with 100 megawatts and eventually increase the figure to 200 megawatts," Mahsouli said.

Iran is eyeing to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than US$1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.

The country currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq.

Iran exports eight billion kilowatt hours of electricity to neighbouring countries every year.
