Erdoğan says Turkey cannot move forward with 20-year-old Constitution

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the country needs a new Constitution, calling the current charter outdated.

Speaking at an event marking May 19 – Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, Erdoğan said the work on drafting a new Constitution is ongoing and must not be delayed.

“We are continuing efforts to prepare a new Constitution. This process cannot be postponed. We cannot continue with a Constitution drafted 20 years ago,” Erdoğan stated.

Following a military coup in 1980, Turkey adopted a new Constitution in 1982. Although it has been amended several times, it remains in effect.
