Trump imposes 50% tariffs on India over Russian oil, warns China could be next

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on India for importing Russian oil and warned that China could face similar sanctions. He tied the move to broader diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

“We’ve made progress. Today’s talks were productive. If Russia and Ukraine reach a deal, we might review these tariffs. But for now, India is paying 50%,” Trump said during a briefing.

Trump said a potential meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin depends on further developments.

The White House confirmed that Moscow expressed interest in a high-level summit. Earlier, U.S. envoy Stephen Witkoff held a three-hour meeting with Putin in Moscow.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the U.S. now has a better understanding of Russia’s conditions, but a Trump-Putin summit remains uncertain.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Trump by phone that any ceasefire must be “fair and lasting.”
