Kemal Can, chairman of Turkish conglomerate Can Holding, was detained in Istanbul on Thursday evening as part of a criminal investigation, Anadolu news agency reported.

The Istanbul prosecutor’s office is investigating Can Holding executives on charges including forming and leading a criminal organisation, money laundering and large-scale fraud.

Earlier this month, prosecutors ordered the seizure of companies linked to Can Holding, including television channels Habertürk TV, Show TV, Bloomberg HT, and education institutions Doğa Koleji and Bilgi University.

Daily Cumhuriyet said the seized assets had been placed under the control of Turkey’s Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). Arrest warrants had also been issued for 10 other people.
