Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was poisoned and is in stable condition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported, citing a source.

According to the organization, Assad was discharged on Sept. 29 from a hospital on the outskirts of Moscow, where he had been receiving treatment.

The source said that during his stay in the clinic, only his brother Maher al-Assad and former presidential secretary-general Mansour Azzam were allowed to visit him.

The source added that the aim of the attack was “to put the Russian leadership in an awkward position and accuse it of killing the former Syrian leader.”
