Russia Warns Armenia: EU Evolving into "Military-Political Bloc"

MOSCOW – Senior Russian officials have issued a sharp warning to Armenia, asserting that the European Union is rapidly transforming from an economic union into an "aggressive military-political bloc." The statement, released on February 5, 2026, emphasizes that Yerevan must carefully consider the changing essence of the EU as it pursues closer integration with Brussels.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, speaking to reporters, stated that while the choice of integration remains a sovereign right of the Armenian people, they must confront the reality of the EU’s current trajectory.

Overchuk noted that Brussels is moving toward a structure that is increasingly hostile toward the Russian Federation, a shift he claims is occurring "before our eyes."

"The Armenian people must ask themselves: are they ready to join a military-political union that is today very aggressively disposed toward Russia?" Overchuk said.

He added that official negotiations for EU accession are a protracted process that could span decades, during which the bloc's internal dynamics could become even more militarized.

The Deputy Prime Minister also reiterated Moscow's long-standing position that simultaneous membership in the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union is "technically and legally impossible."

He pointed out that Armenia would eventually be forced to make a definitive choice between the two integration paths, as the regulatory frameworks of the two unions are fundamentally incompatible.

The warning comes amid a significant downturn in bilateral trade, with Overchuk reporting a drop from $12.4 billion in 2024 to an expected $6 billion in 2025

. This economic cooling, coupled with Armenia's recent legislative moves to align with EU standards, has heightened tensions between the traditional allies.
