Ruben Vardanyan sentenced to 20 years in prison

Armenian citizen Ruben Vardanyan, charged under Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code with crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, terrorism and financing terrorism, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The verdict was announced at an open hearing of the Baku Military Court chaired by Judge Zeynal Agayev.

Vardanyan was provided with a Russian-language interpreter and a state-appointed defense lawyer. Prosecutors, victims and their representatives attended the hearing.

The prosecution had earlier requested a life sentence.
