Portugal enacts public face-veil ban with fines up to €3,000
Portuguese President António José Seguro has signed into law legislation prohibiting the concealment of faces in public spaces, a restriction widely referred to locally as the "burqa law," Qafqazinfo reported, citing international media.
Passed by the Portuguese parliament in July, the law prohibits wearing garments designed to conceal the face or impede identification in public places. It also criminalizes coercing individuals to cover their faces on grounds of religion, gender, age, or ethnic background.
Violators face fines ranging between €150 and €3,000, with exemptions granted for healthcare, occupational safety, artistic performances, and severe weather conditions.
