Will iPhones disable texting while driving?
The patent application, filed in 2008 and granted on April 22, 2014, pitches a system that will disable texting (and possibly other phone functions) for the person sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.“In one embodiment, a handheld computing device can provide a lock-out mechanism without requiring any modifications or additions to a vehicle by using a motion analyzer, a scenery analyzer and a lock-out mechanism,” the patent application reads. “In other embodiments, the handheld computing device can provide a lock-out mechanism with modifications or additions to the vehicle, including the use of signals transmitted by the vehicle or by the vehicle key when engaged with the vehicle.”The application proposes that a feature like this could be "a significant selling point in the eyes of concerned parents, and it could lead to legislation that would require all handheld computing devices to disable texting while driving."This technology would be the first of its kind to come built in for the iPhone, although there are several similar apps available for the Android, such as the No Texting While Driving App. Companies like AT&T also offer features like DriveMode, which sends auto-reply messages when you get texts while operating a vehicle going over 25 mph.Watch more: Man drives off cliff while textingEven with these solutions available, more than 3,000 teenagers die per year from texting and driving.
