LG’s New Premium Phone Is Huge, and Focused on Photography

On Thursday LG announced its latest flagship smartphone, the G2 Pro. Not surprisingly, it’s a biggie: The G2 Pro is built around a high-resolution 5.9-inch screen, a notable increase over its predecessor’s 5.5-inch display. Those 5.9 inches also edge out the 5.7-inch screen on the Galaxy Note 3, currently the gold standard for really big phones.

The iPhone 5s, for comparison, has a 4.0-inch screen. Here’s a Galaxy Note 3 next to an iPhone 5. Keep in mind that the G2 Pro is even bigger:Aside from its enormous screen, the G2 Pro’s big emphasis is on photography. The 13-megapixel rear camera features image stabilization for shaky hands, a condition that has been known to occur when trying to snap a photo with a 6-inch smartphone. The phone lets you focus a shot after taking it, and a burst mode lets you shoot a whole bunch of images in quick succession.Heck, there’s even a flash built in specifically for taking “soft”-lit selfies. Some things, after all, should never be in ultra-high definition.Speaking of: The G2 Pro can capture Ultra HD, or 4K, video, though the screen can’t play it back in that high resolution. These days, there aren’t too many devices out there that can — aside from some pricey TV sets. Photography is really the thing here, but LG’s baked in some other nice touches, like improved audio and a Knock Code, which lets you unlock the phone by tapping a pattern on the phone itself. So “Shave and a Haircut” could be the new “password.”LG’s announcement comes a couple of weeks ahead of Mobile World Congress, the mobile industry’s biggest show of the year. LG used last year’s event to unveil its predecessor and won its share of admirers in the process. We’ll be heading to Barcelona for the first time this year for some quality time with the G2 Pro and the rest of the smartphone deluge.
