28 jihadi teens plotting attack on city, warn anti-terror chiefs

28 jihadi teens plotting attack on city, warn anti-terror chiefs

Counter-terror chiefs said the youths, including five teenage girls, plotted to join Islamic State and similar groups in Syria.

Now they fear Brighton is at risk of a knife or gun rampage, with five – including three brothers – already managing to join Jabhat al-Nusra, an Al-Qaida ally.

A further three have been banned from travelling to Syria by a court order, where ISIS – also known as Daesh – is fighting for survival on several fronts.

The group were discovered during a council review into the Deghaye brothers Amer, 22, Abdullah, 18, and Jaffar, 17, who left Brighton for Syria.

Only Amer is believed to still be alive, with Abdullah and Jaffar killed fighting in 2014 along with childhood pal Ibrahim Kamara, 19.

But a threat remains from any number of the 28 potential jihadis identified.

The risk is that they try to perpretrate a Lee Rigby-style attack possible in the seaside city.

While the difficulty of obtaining explosives led to concerns that a terror atrocity could be committed with small arms like a pistol.

The risk was revealed in a secret assessment by security services and council officials in Brighton, drawn together in March 2014.

A source said: "The first threat level that they were concerned about is that some of them would take a knife and kill people, a bit like what happened in the Lee Rigby attack.

"It's obviously a serious concern that there are 28 young people brainwashed to the point that they want to join jihadist groups or consider plotting against innocent people here at home."

"The concern has not abated; there's a lot of extremism-related problems lurking that the social services are attempting to deal with," the source told The Sunday Times.

The paper reported that up to 60% of the Brighton cell were converts to Islam and one of the teenage girls had been referred to the government's counter-radicalisation programme.

It comes after world leaders were warned by US president Barack Obama that the threat of an ISIS nuclear terror attack is real.

Prime Minister David Cameron now says hundreds more armed police will be deployed across the UK in a bid to halt a Paris-style terror attack.
