Euro 2016: Fears of football terror attack spark huge drill

More than 500 emergency workers responded to a mock terrorist attack in preparation for the 2016 UEFA European Championship – due to kick off in France on June 10.

The two-hour exercise in Bordeaux, France, involved a mock attack on Europe's second largest public square, involving two groups of "terrorists".

The drill involved one "terrorist" charging into the crowd of actors and detonating a suicide vest as another was shot by police.

A third took more than 10 hostages.

Policemen, firefighters and medical workers rushed to evacuate the crowd, treat the wounded and remove bodies as police dogs and robots were sent in to collect information and look for hidden dangers.

As emergency services worked in the main square, another group of emergency workers waited at the Contemporary Art Museum nearby.

The Place des Quinconces has capacity for up to 62,000 people and will be used as an outdoor zone for fans during the UEFA competition.
