Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in Baku at the invitation of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for talks on Turkish-Azerbaijani relations, in his first international trip after being elected president last month.

According to a written statement released on the presidential website last week, during the talks, Erdoğan and Aliyev will exchange views on cooperation between the two countries and discuss regional and international issues.

President Aliyev was among the first to call Erdoğan to congratulate him on his election win. Erdoğan won the Aug. 10 presidential election with 51.8 percent of the popular vote.

Last month Erdoğan called Aliyev and extended his condolences to the people of Azerbaijan for the Azerbaijani soldiers who died in a skirmish with Armenian soldiers in Nagorno-Karabakh in early August.

As part of his first trip abroad as president, Erdoğan visited the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) after his inauguration late last month. He is scheduled to join the NATO summit, which will be held on Sept. 4-5, and is expected to meet with the prince of Wales then.
