Azerbaijan's state religious committee has new head

President Ilham Aliyev decreed today, appointing Mubariz Qurbanli as head of the State Committee for Work with Religious Structures, state news agency Azartac reported.

Qurbanli is deputy executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) and a member of Milli Maclis, or parliament.

He will replace in the post Elshad Isgandarov, who was fired in April amid allegations of ties to US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen.
