Trump on third presidential term: "I run the country and the world"

U.S. President Donald Trump admitted that a hypothetical run for a third presidential term would be extremely difficult. He made the remarks in an interview with The Atlantic.

When asked whether he had instructed the Justice Department to study the legality of his potential participation in the 2028 elections, Trump said no but appeared to leave the door open: "It would be quite a break, wouldn’t it?" he said after a pause, laughing. "Well, maybe I’m just trying to break it."

Trump noted that his supporters had repeatedly urged him to run again but emphasized: "It’s not in my plans. And I think it would be very hard to do." The Atlantic points out that the Trump Organization is already selling hats reading "Trump 2028."

Asked about the difference between his first and second terms, Trump said: "In the first term, I was running the country while fighting for survival against dishonest people. In the second, I am running the country and the world."

Under the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1951, a person may be elected president no more than twice. The next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for 2028.
