A magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, the strongest since 1952, according to the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Geophysical Service.

Tsunami warnings were issued for Japan, the U.S. Pacific coast, and the Kuril Islands. Japan’s meteorological agency said waves up to 3 meters could hit eight prefectures.

The first wave reached the Kurils, where residents were evacuated. North Kurilsk's port and a fish processing facility sustained damage.

U.S. President Donald Trump said: “Tsunami warnings are in effect for Hawaii, Alaska, and the West Coast. Japan is also at risk. Stay strong and stay safe!”
