In what case, the name of Milli Majlis can be changed? - Opinion

Azerbaijani Parliament should be called not Milli Majlis, but Millet Mejlisi. This proposal was made by MP Zahid Oruj. Oruj believes that this issue should not follow parallels with Russian and English.

"Certainly some people will say that in France there is a National Assembly and the name does not specifically characterize the nation, but means the presence of the majority. And Azerbaijan is a multinational country. We changed the name of the National Bank to the Central Bank. We should also change the name of the Azerbaijani parliament. From a political point of view there is a need to remove reference to national identity.

My suggestion in any case does not arise from a desire to make something similar to the Great National Majlis of Turkey or to take a symbolic action like them. In Azerbaijan, these attributes take permanent character, so we have to be back to them periodically," he said.

In his comments for ANN.Az the analyst at the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Azerbaijan Rovshan Ibrahimov said that such proposals may be nominated by any person, but their implementation means a certain amount of money to be spent.

"I never thought that this would be a matter of debate. In fact it is only a proposal and such opinions are voiced regularly. I note that such changes occur periodically, and this is not surprising. Several years ago, changes were made in the name of the Presidential Administration and the Central Bank. Over time, the need for such changes may occur. However, the adoption of such changes requires changes in the Constitution.

In Azerbaijan, any changes to the Constitution may be amended only by referendum. So I do not believe that in order to just change the name of the legislature, measures will be implemented, requiring financial costs and a large administrative resource. Therefore, this issue will remain a topic of debate, especially in democratic countries, where every person can freely express his opinion,” he said.
